Keeping your bearings clean and lubed will keep them running smoothly for years to come. Cleaning them regularly will ensure you a better ride and enhanced performance while your out there longboarding.
1. First thing is to remove all the bearings from your wheels. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is by using the truck axle to pry the bearing out (it doesn’t harm the bearing at all when done properly). Also most bearings have a outer shield that you need to remove to fully clean the bearing. This can be done by using a needle or thumb tack to pry it out. Be careful when doing this so you do not damage the shield.
2. Wipe off any dirt that may be directly on the bearings by using a paper towel or old toothbrush. Then place the bearings in a glass jar and cover them with mineral spirits or some other bearing cleaner (acetone can be used as well). Give the jar a good shake and then allow them to sit for 10 or 15 minutes.
3. You then want to rinse the bearings with Isopropyl Alcohol (the higher the concentration the better). This is done to get rid of any left over debris and dry the bearings out. Then place about 2 drops of bearing lube or speed cream inside the bearing and give it a spin to work it around the inside.
4. Place the protective shield back into the bearing, put them back in the wheels and your good to go!
Always remember that riding in rain or through puddles will damage your bearings and cause them to rust. If you think your bearings are dirty (usually can tell by them not spinning freely or making a crunchy sound) then clean them right away, it will extend the life of the bearings greatly. Oh yeah and never use WD40 to clean your bearings, it will ruin them. Try to only use mineral spirits, theres really no substitute.
