I’m going to give you guys some helpful and important advice on how tight your trucks should be. Many people feel the need to crank down their trucks to the point there bushings are being squished and this is simply not the best way to ride.
I always like to say you should be riding your trucks a little more loose then you feel comfortable, it will really improve your board control in the long run and you always have that extra ability to turn in case of an emergency (car, dog, old lady etc.)
Keep in mind that you dont want your truck hanger to be flopping around, tighten the kingpin to the point where that the slop is gone. Being able to move the hanger like that without engaging the bushing is useless so try to get it just beyond that point. Instead always try different bushings by mixing up the duros and shapes of your bushings till you find a combo you like. Check out the Bushing Guide For Idiots that I wrote not too long ago.
Tightening your trucks up too much because they’re too squirrely? Get some harder bushings. Loosening your trucks to the point the kingpin nut is falling off? Get some softer bushings! It’ll make a huge difference.
I personally like running my trucks really loose with some soft bushings such as yellow Venoms or orange Khiros so I can drift and throw hard carves with no problem. Furthermore I prefer to have my front truck a bit looser than my rear since most of the turning is coming from the front truck. Remember keep the rear truck just a tad tighter and don’t overdo it.
Speed wobbles are a problem for a lot of people but in my opinion your trucks being loose doesn’t have a huge impact compared to rider ability. Having them loose allows for adjustments much easier at high speeds and can actually be better to prevent and fend off those nasty speed wobbles.
Hope you all learned something! To finish things off check out this video of Matt Rodridguez talking about how much he likes loose trucks. Pretty funny stuff.
